08/11/2016 A quick trip into town for compost and our feathered friends at home

Maximum temperature 11C, minimum 0C.  34 km/h SW wind. Dry but lots of rain forecast for the coming week.
Three large buildings are apparently going up here for the manufacture of wooden pallets.  Great spot, right by the side of the highway and the on and off ramps. Chasseneuil sur Bonnieure.

Winter flowers for sale.

We always find some sort of road obstruction!

Robin on the window sill, it does not often come this close...

Great Tit watching the sky from the window sill...

  1. Your robin is so nice on the photo! In Dutch it is a roodborstje. My mom loves that bird.

    1. It is also roodborstje in Afrikaans but in French it is Rouge-gourge. I agree with your Mum it is a cute little bird. Have a good week Diane

  2. Yes, there does always seem to be road obstructions where you are... perhaps because the roads are so narrow.

  4. Lovely set of photos Diane!
The passerine birds are getting back to their winter habits in our gardens. I am so sorry not to have my previous garden anymore more nor my vixen... sad.

Pied ans Grey wagtail are considered to be the same bird. But scientists love to complicate things and if one feather differs they will declare a new species!! LOL! OK I am exaggerating but you get the picture!
Cold, wet and windy here today, all I hate!!
Keep well and warm and enjoy your day :)

    1. Thanks Noushka, I am sure you miss your vixen :-(

I do not understand how the grey and the pied can be the same bird but if that is what the French say!!! Scientifically according to my book they are Motacilla alba and Motacilla cinerea. But then when I look up in another place I get The Pied Wagtail is still classified sometimes as subspecies of the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba), although more often it is now considered as full species with Motacilla yarrellii as scientific name. All beyond me!

Take care and keep warm Diane

    2. Pied Wagtail and White Wagtail are the same species, with different vernacular names dependent on the plumage found in certain subspecies. Pied Wagtail and Grey Wagtail are separate species, always have been, and your scientific nomenclature for the two species is correct.

    3. I chuckled when I saw the road obstruction. When we visited France a couple of years ago there seemed to be road work going on everywhere we went. We could never figure out whether the authorities were truly efficient in getting everything done promptly, or whether they were so inefficient it never got finished!

    4. Thanks David you confirm what I thought, but it seems that France has other ideas as Noushka said in a post a few back that in France the Grey Wagtail here is called the White Wagtail. I think it is a French thing just to confuse me!!!

Our narrow roads in the country are hopeless, one tractor on the road and one could wait for ages. This particular reason for the cones were they were cutting the small hedge!!! Keep warm Diane
