03/08/2017 Photos in the garden - what a change :-)))))

Maximum temperature 26C, minimum 16C.   9 km/h NW winds with 27 km/h gusts.  Dry.
Calendula and hoverfly.

Another bud on my favourite rose bush.

Small white (Pieris rapae)

Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria)

A very bedraggled Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

A thirsty bee.

Thought this was a hoverfly, but that sting in the tail looks like something else!

As if we have not got enough of these already!!!!!

Yesterday's crab spider today.  It caught a bee, but it looks like every insect within range is trying to get in on the act.  I blew gently on it to see if all the little flies would go but it dropped the bee instead :-(((

It went to the edge to see what was happening and I think that little fly on its head is in danger!

The neighbour's cat hiding under the hedge watching out for 'our' little birds. Grrrrrrr.

  1. Another lovely series Diane. You take super macros and I am always interested not only in those gorgeous flowers, but also your little visitors. Your neighbor's cat is a cute one too. Thank you and wishing you a great weekend :)

  4. That's a lot of wing missing in the Red Admiral. It always amazes me how they can fly with so much damage. Too bad your neighbours wouldn't keep their cat indoors. The havoc wreaked on bird populations by domestic cats is staggering.

    1. David there is much damage to the Red Admirals wings, but you would never know that if you only saw it flying around. The cat sadly is a barn cat so there is not chance it would ever be kept shut in. It is not the only one but this seems to be the one we see most!!! Hope your weekend is a good one. Diane

  6. Ohh that bud. Just beautiful.

I know, "it's nature." But I have a hard time, with observing it. Good you tried to intervene. I guess. I know, some would say, don't intervene. Eeeek.

Nasty old neighbor cat!!! Look at that expression. Look at those eyes. Just daring you, to do something. Grrrrr....

And no, I would not say that cats and birds are "just nature"! That cat is well fed. He has no business out, stalking birds. He does not need them, to survive.

In fact, our cats were always indoor cats. Yes, I am that *horrible* a person. I confined my cats inside! LOL Thus protecting them from cars, and all roaming creatures, which would find them, a tasty snack. Plus, I protected birds.

    :-))))))

    1. Yes I should have let the spider be but it looked so unhappy with all the little flies getting in on the act!!!!
These cats here are all barn cats so the wold birds have to learn to be quick but sometimes the cat is even quicker :-((
      Keep well Diane
