15/12/2017 A walk around Devizes, Wiltshire, UK

Maximum temperature 6C,  Minimum 1C,  Some rain and bitterly cold wind.
Some of the shops ...

Walter Rose & Son is a multiple award-winning retail and catering butcher - excellent, but not cheap!!....

Have you ever tasted the fabulous Wadworth range of beers, including the ubiquitous 6X?  If so, did you know they come from Devizes?

Many pubs around the town and lots of  them Wadworth, though this sign is a free house, so not tied to any particular brewery...

The famous statue of Ceres, the Roman Goddess of the harvest, adorns the Corn Exchange and keeps vigil over the Market Place...

The Bear hotel - Local annals record the licence was granted in 1559, but it was thought to be a hostelry long before that!  It overlooks the market square...

A close up of the bear from above...

Clock tower of the Devizes Shambles, an early butchers market, now used for fairs and markets in the town centre...

The Market Cross was designed by Benjamin Wyatt and built in 1814.

Monument & Fountain, Market Square, Devizes
A complicated structure combining a statue, fountain and reservoir! Inscription under the bowl says everything you wanted to know! It was erected  in 1879 from public subscriptions to the memory of the Right Honorable Thomas H.S. Sotheron Astcourt, a local Member of Parliament  for 33 years.

Looks as if the birds like the company of Thomas HS...

Primulas growing in a pot...

and it seems the tractors are following me from France to the UK! LOL.

Loving having your comments but I will only get back to replying when we get home in January 😊

  2. Thomas Astcourt seems to have an expression saying he has known worse than a pigeon on his head. Great composition of photos, I enjoyed it.

  4. Rain and bitterly cold wind... -sighhhhhhhh-

Yes, you attract tractors, don't you? -grin-

    How ever can petunias grow?????

"The Bear hotel - Local annals record the licence was granted in 1559, but it was thought to be a hostelry long before that!" Now that is an old establishment! I was just searching info on John Dee (1527-1609), English Renaissance man... He was around back then. :-)))))

Must look up, the area where you are now... See if it is anywhere near London, or other places... Meaning, I follow English Instagrams and they often tell the local weather. Morning and night.

    Stay warm!!!!

  5. Somewhat west of Bath..... At least I think it is west. Sorry if I mixed directions up. :-)

Do you visit Bath, while there? Perhaps it isn't that lovely, in winter....

Can you tell, I love searching. ,-))))
