03/12/2021 Getting so far behind!!!!!!!

The maximum temperature here today is 12⁰C, minimum -2⁰C. Grey skies. Wind 27km/h icy South-Westerly winds with gusts up to 53 km/h.  Dry at present but 90% rain is forecast.

Sorry, I am struggling to keep up with everything. I had a bad fall out walking a couple of weeks back, looking at some cattle when my foot disappeared down a pothole. Sadly causing some damage to my lens which we are trying to get a spare part for.  I think I cracked a rib, I did not bother to get it checked as I know the feeling from past broken ribs. Nothing you can do other than wait for it to heal. I was black and blue and very sore. I was on the mend when a carpet slipped under my foot and I opened up my shin from sliding into the bed.  Two days later, I cracked my shin on the wheelbarrow in exactly the same place!! My leg ballooned and turned blue, so an urgent trip to the Dr.  I now have a special dressing on it to prevent it from healing too early and causing a clot, it is also heavily bandaged with a compression bandage, this now has to be dressed daily for the next 10days!!!  I am now on day three.  Herewith are some photos from that walk plus a few others in December.

Before I fell on the fatal day,18/11/2022, I was surprised to see this Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) still around in Mid-November

Dandelion (Crepis vesicaria).

Common chicory (Cichorium intybus).

Gorse. (Ulex europaeus)

European holly (Ilex aquifolium).

Oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare).

Teasel, (Dipsacus).

Vipers Bugloss (Echium vulgare).

Red clover (Trifolium pratense).

A log of wood - I thought at first it was ET 😀

Cattle when I should have looked where I was going!

Grey heron (Ardea cinerea).

Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

Great Banded Furrow Bee (Halictus scabiosa) on the cosmos 20/11/2021 before the first frost.

A welcome visitor to the garden, hopefully in hiding from the hunters!
red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa).

Autumn in all its glory.  Acer tree.

Hydrangeas.

Possibly Mycena polygramma next to the woodpile.

Calendula.

Mexican Orange blossom (Choisya ternata).

One of the last roses.

A maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba)  golden carpet.

European robin (Erithacus rubecula),

All of the later photos (after the walk), are taken with my old Nikon D3200 camera and the old temperamental Nikon 55-300mm lens, or the Nikon Coolpix S7000.  My D3500 camera is fine and survived the fall, but it does not want to work with the 55-300 lens!

Take care everybody, keep well and stay safe.

  1. Oh my! I can feel your pain coming through your words. I wish you a speedy recovery, as easy as it can possibly be. Falls as we age are inevitable I fear. I hope you are well on the road to recovery by Christmas.

As always, your photos are exceptional!

    1. Thanks Marie, recovery is sadly slower as we get older. All of these disasters should have been avoided other than the siding carpet which caught me totally by surprise. Recovery is very slow, but I will get there. Cheers Diane

  2. I'm so sorry to hear of your fall, Diane, and the damage to your lens and especially to your person. It sound as if the lens is going to be easier to repair than is your good self. I hope that you manage to take it easy and recover soon. It must be particularly frustrating in what is the build-up to Christmas.

As always, I am extremely impressed by your excellent, and beautifully presented, photography. I'd never have guessed that you have had to resort to your old equipment - I see no drop-off in quality!

We too had Red Admiral regularly on flowers in mid November! However, it has turned much colder now and we have had our first snows.

Take great care, and get that leg better soon. Best wishes to you and Nigel - - - Richard

    1. Richard we have had some snow as well and at present it is very wet. My leg is taking its time and the lens spare part is equally slow, They have told us it is available and how much, but we are still waiting for them to tell us where we can pay and how can we get it!!!!! Two further emails with no reply very frustrating.

Thanks for the good wishes we need them at present. All the very best to you and the family, cheers Diane

    1. One fall and two accidents on the shin so yea that is three 😊 Never the less I am being extra careful I am terrified of hitting the shin again as it still looks awful. I have 3 more days with the compression bandage then maybe it will feel better (I hope). Thanks your thoughts are appreciated. Keep safe Diane

  5. My word, Diane, you have been in the wars, one injury after another. I am surprised that you were able to furnish any pictures at all. Do take good care of yourself and get better soon. I was encouraged that the partridge found safe haven in your garden. The fact that we continue to massacre wildlife in the face of declining populations everywhere is a mystery to me. I read of EU regulations protecting wildlife in various ways, but enforcement seems to be severely lacking. I keep hoping we can learn, and mend our ways, but I don't think we ever will. Gros bisous de ton ami canadien. David

    1. Thanks David for the kind words and kisses, appreciated. I am now getting frustrated as although the spare part for the lens is available we cannot find out how to get it or pay for it!!! I wish companies would answer their emails! I am also slow in healing so nothing is easy at present.
Here they seem to shoot anything despite certain rules and regulations 😖😖
Take care and keep safe, Diane

  9. How awful! I am so sorry to hear about your falls Diane, and I hope it won’t be much longer before you are 100 percent. It all sounds dreadfully painful. With all this going on it is very sweet of you to share your photos, all which are absolutely wonderful! Please take good care of yourself and heal quickly.

    1. Thanks Denise for your caring comments. I am totally fed up with being so stupid and falling, just not looking where I was going, and the two cracks on the shin in the same place were even worse. Still very slow healing as well, the problem with getting older!!!
Keep safe and take care, Diane

  10. Here is hoping that the leg is looking better. What a mess. But you have posted some fine photos in spite of all. Beautiful partridge, and I am fond of the hydrangeas, as they do not grow well here far to the south, but I remember them with affection from the time I lived more northerly.

    1. Thanks for the visit and the comment. I am on day 10 of the compression bandage today so hopefully healing of the wound will take place now. It has made life a little difficult!
The hydrangeas are drying on the plant so the frosts do not seem to effect them very much as they are also protected next to a wall. Have a great weekend and take care, Diane

  11. That is sad about falling, that isn't good. Do take care and keep up the treatments that help most.

Good to see you are still blogging here. So many bloggers gone or taking a break for now, that I used to visit. I only post at Christmas now, so I'm in that category too.😏

Hugs and sending healing energy your way.😊

  13. I wonder if the Common chicory is the same as the one you can eat?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Chicory is an herbaceous plant in the dandelion family. It has bright blue, and sometimes white or pink, blossoms. When eating chicory plants the leaves, buds, and roots can all be consumed.
      Cheers Diane
