28/02/2018 A new visitor to our garden amongst other feathered friends.

Maximum temperature today 4C, minimum -7C. Feels like -10C Dry; 15 km/h Easterly winds with up to 35 km/h gusts.

Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes)....

Great excitement, a first for us in our garden...

Take a look at that massive beak. Its food is mainly seeds and fruit kernels, especially those of cherries, which it cracks with its powerful bill.

You can see here it is quite a lot larger than the Great tit bottom left...

Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)....

The water keeps icing up....

Complaining! So I went out for the 4th time in a couple of hours to break the ice.

Female House sparrow (Passer domesticus)...

Icing up again!!!!!

Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto). So much larger than the house sparrows around it.

European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis).

28/03/2017 Around the garden and a trip into Brico Leclerc

Maximum temperature 18C, minimum 5C. 8 kmh N wind. 1.5 mm rain measured this morning.

Bumblebee in the plum blossom.

25/05/2016 A great sunset, and lots of flowers with a little help from our friends

Maximum temperature 23C, minimum 6C. 34 km/h SE winds. The forecast had it wrong again - we only had about 3 drops of rain this evening. Luckily I watered the vegetables.

A dramatic sunset.

Greenfinch.

Buttercup and bug.

Daisies plus fly.

Clematis.

Californian poppy.

White Love in a mist.

Viola.

Peony.

A collection of roses.

Sweet William.

Weigela (I think).

Common lizard.

Shadows Along the Zambezi by Diana M. Hawkins

I so enjoyed this book and towards the end I could not put it down only finishing at 2am! Having lived most of my early life in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, so many places had a lot of meaning to me. Diana’s knowledge of every detail in this book is incredible.
Sadly, so much of this story is fact and very true. It made me cry and at times it made me smile. I hope that it might awaken the world as to what is going on in many African countries, and instead of so many people burying their heads in the sand, perhaps they might stand up and do something. Smuggling and hunting are very soon going to leave the world a very sad place when there are no animals left.
Now I am off to read Shadows over an African Heart.

Shadows Over an African Heart: a novel by Diana M. Hawkins

Shadows over an African Heart is the perfect name for this book. The shadows are even bigger than I ever dreamt, and this book is a real eye-opener to the truth of what is going on. I was in tears in many places in this book. The fictional side story I so enjoyed, but the true and very sad story of the elephants and other animals; the Zimbabwe government has so much to answer for.
The world needs to read both of Diana’s books and action needs to be taken before the children of today never see wildlife as we have had the joy to grow up with around us.
There are many African words in the story which to me were great to be reminded of, but many are explained as you read and there is a good glossary of the words in the back of the book.
