03/04/2021 Trying to catch up.........

Maximum temperature here today 14⁰C, minimum 4⁰C.  Dry.   27km/h very cold North-Easterly winds with gusts up to 59 km/h.  If the forecast is right it starts getting colder tomorrow and threats of heavy frost and possible snow!!!!! We have been having temperatures up to 26C this past couple of weeks!

Sorry, it is almost a month since my last post.  We have had fabulous weather and I have been working in the garden trying to get everything ready for summer crops.  I did not plan on the return of this coming week's cold weather, but I should have known better, we have had frosts before in May.  I have not taken a lot of photos but there has been at least one photo a day for the record.

Pansies which I hope will survive next week, they are pretty hardy!

As above.

Tulips so far have only been red, but there are orange and black which hopefully will still flower.

As above.

The sides of the roads are full of cowslips at present (Primula veris).

and primroses (Primula polyantha) seen in the dentists garden.  Yes, three long and expensive trips to the dentist for a new crown!  Photo from my phone.

Also seen in the dentists garden and again photo taken with the phone, Bee-fly (Bombylius major).

Buttercups in our lawn.

In the garden, Camellia japonica.

Cherry blossom which might not like a frost! We lost most of our cherries last year because of too much rain and they all split.

I think this is a bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) seen on the wild violets which are all over our lawn!

As above.

Common Wall Lizard (Podarcis muralis), they are going to have a shock this coming week with the return of the cold.

23/03/2021 the half-moon, taken from the garden....

27/03/2021 and a full moon over the neighbour's rooftop.

The biggest of the vegetable gardens, 80 potatoes planted. At the far end of the bed, the butternuts and pumpkins will be planted after all fear of frost has gone! In the foreground is chard.  Further down on the right is sorrel.  On the left, almost out of view, there are four rhubarb plants.

This the end of March photos I will try to be a bit quicker with the April, photos, the cold weather approaching may give me more time at the computer!

Take care everybody, keep well and stay safe.

  3. Hi Diane - amazing and wonderful life to see ... gorgeous. One (?) of your garden plots looks amazing ... so tidy and organised ... reminding me of times gone by. I'd love to be nearby when things come to fruition ... just to admire and perhaps share ... but I'd have helped too!
Yes - it'll be colder here tomorrow - looks like today is a little more reasonable ... thanks for taking the time out to post - all the very best - Hilary

    1. At last we have had a bit of rain so the garden is cheering up again. First we had too much, then it was too dry and too cold, so hopefully we are now getting back to normal what ever that maybe. I suspect we might still get another cold spell yet though. I would love to share if only you were a little closer. Have a good weekend, Diane

  6. Sorry for my late visit, Diane. I too have been busy in the garden, and dealing with a few problems too. I'm hoping to get back to sanity in a couple of week's time!

I never fail to be impressed by your garden, and the wonderful photos of flowers and wildlife that you take in it. And I'm always very envious of your lizards!

In the space of a week we have gone from the highest March temperature for 53 years, and the second highest March temeperature ever, to snow on the ground and the bird baths frozen over. I suspect that it might create problems for both flora and fauna.

Take great care and stay safe - - - Richard

    1. Hi Richard, I find the garden very time consuming at this time of the year and I sadly do not have time to even go for walks. The 2 to 3 hours out walking is far better spent weeding or digging even though my back complains at the idea!

I do love our lizards but we have not seen any of the green ones for a couple of years now. Not sure what has happened to them as we used to have several of them in the garden. I miss them. Yes the weather is confusing everything as you say both flora and fauna. We now have rain for a few days but I am happy with that so long as it does not keep going for too many days!

Keep well and best wishes to you and the family, Diane

  7. Beautiful flowers and all, Diane! Seeing all the colors, they're gorgeous esp after a long winter! Way too early to set flowers out here, we always have frost in May. We learned the hard way about that when we first moved here outside of Chicago, set them out too early and had to replace them after a hard frost. Happy gardening!!!

    1. We have had spring flowers for a while now Pam but most of them are short lived and go over very quickly. I like it when the roses come out as they generally keep going for al of summer. Keep well and take care Diane

  9. Gorgeous series of flower shots Diane, the colours are wonderful.. not so much the expensive dentist visits and you have just reminded me that I must make an appointment soon! I know you have had enough of the cold weather, probably as much as I have had enough of the hot, although we are expecting a change on Sunday..big storm brewing. Happy weekend to you both, enjoy.

    1. Thanks Grace, I know you hate too hot as much as I hate too cold :-) Seldom do I ever complain about the heat so long as it is not like Vegas when we were there. That really was too hot, well over 40C. Because I am ill with air con I am happy sitting in front of a fan, but our lounge is always cold even when it is 38C outside, the inside will never go over 22C. Thick stone walls and the room only gets late afternoon sun.
Have a great weekend and hope that hamstring soon improves. Diane
