03/07/2017 South African photos again as nothing much different in the garden! Mostly birds as we saw so many while we were away.

Maximum temperature 25C, minimum 13C. 12 km/h NW winds. 1 mm rain measured, cloudy all day. Full sun due back tomorrow if the forecast has it right!

Pearlspotted Owl (Glaucidium perlatum).

Spotted Eagle Owl (Bubo africanus).

As above.

Burchell's Coucal, (Centropus_supercillosus).

Red crested korhaan (Eupodotis ruficrista).

Bateleur eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus).

Long crested Eagle (Lophaetus occipitalis).

Red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio).

Yellow-billed kite (Milvus aegyptius).

Wildebeest (Connochaetes) and Impala (Aepyceros melampus).

Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus).

Bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), classified as endangered in RSA.

Southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri).

As above, you can see the large wingspan, and yes they can fly!

18/04/2017 One photo only taken today. I have been identifying bird photos all day at the computer so here are a few.

Maximum temperature 14C, minimum 4C. 24 kmh very chilly NW wind.

34 kmh gusts. Dry.

The only photo taken today - An unidentified beetle with apparently a damaged wing.

The following are all photos taken in Botswana in February. I have only just got around to identifying some of them. I am hoping that identifications are correct! Please let me know if you disagree.

Pale chanting goshawk( Melirax canorus)

African Jacana (Actophilornis africana).

Cardinal woodpecker female (Dendropicos fuscescens).

African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer).

This bird has a remarkable cry, clicking HERE I hope will give you the sound.

Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis)

As above, a very patient bird on the hotel grounds.

Hammerkop (Scopus umbretta).

Also known as the Lightning Bird for the belief in some cultures that people who tamper with its nest will be struck by lightning.

Lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus)

Redbilled Hornbill (Tokus erythrorhynchus). At its tree nest.

White-faced whistling duck (Dendrocygna viduata).

Yellow-billed Oxpecker (Buphagus africanus) on a Cape Buffalo.

Yellow-billed kite, (Milvus aegyptius)

Shadows Along the Zambezi by Diana M. Hawkins

I so enjoyed this book and towards the end I could not put it down only finishing at 2am! Having lived most of my early life in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, so many places had a lot of meaning to me. Diana’s knowledge of every detail in this book is incredible.
Sadly, so much of this story is fact and very true. It made me cry and at times it made me smile. I hope that it might awaken the world as to what is going on in many African countries, and instead of so many people burying their heads in the sand, perhaps they might stand up and do something. Smuggling and hunting are very soon going to leave the world a very sad place when there are no animals left.
Now I am off to read Shadows over an African Heart.

Shadows Over an African Heart: a novel by Diana M. Hawkins

Shadows over an African Heart is the perfect name for this book. The shadows are even bigger than I ever dreamt, and this book is a real eye-opener to the truth of what is going on. I was in tears in many places in this book. The fictional side story I so enjoyed, but the true and very sad story of the elephants and other animals; the Zimbabwe government has so much to answer for.
The world needs to read both of Diana’s books and action needs to be taken before the children of today never see wildlife as we have had the joy to grow up with around us.
There are many African words in the story which to me were great to be reminded of, but many are explained as you read and there is a good glossary of the words in the back of the book.
