10/05/2017 We have been working all day in the garden. A very few late photos taken in the drizzle.

Maximum temperature 20C, minimum 4C. 18 km/h S wind 30 km/h gusts. Rain on and off.

Mrs Blackbird (Turdus merula)...

and Mr singing merrily on the telephone line.

Sage.

Finally cleared of grass and dug over (lots of stone!) A few bags of manure and we can start planting.

Three large bags of broad beans!

29/04/2017 A trip trip to the local market this morning and a few photos in the garden.

Maximum temperature 18C, minimum 1C. 14 kmh SE wind. Cloud and sun. Dry.

Our local Saturday morning market....

Fresh oysters on the right where I was heading.

Just out of town they are building a new factory, I hope it does not look too out of place...

Bee and look at that pollen sac...

Common lizard trying to catch a bit of sun.

The peonies are opening.

Just for the record - the top patch is now covered with turf from the new veggie garden so we (Nigel!)can get to work on the garden,

25/04/2017 More of the same!

Maximum temperature 16C, minimum 3C. 23 kmh NE wind, 34 km/h gusts. Overcast and light rain.

Cherries.

The longhorn beetle is still around despite the cooling weather....

Peonies will be open very soon. Note the small bug on the left!

Bluebells are starting to go over but will be around for a few more days.

For the record - New veggie garden at the back and moving some of the turf to a spot closer that Nigel has dug out as it was full of weed.

The new small garden will be next to the green house, not fenced, so we can plant nothing here that the rabbits might fancy!

Shadows Along the Zambezi by Diana M. Hawkins

I so enjoyed this book and towards the end I could not put it down only finishing at 2am! Having lived most of my early life in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, so many places had a lot of meaning to me. Diana’s knowledge of every detail in this book is incredible.
Sadly, so much of this story is fact and very true. It made me cry and at times it made me smile. I hope that it might awaken the world as to what is going on in many African countries, and instead of so many people burying their heads in the sand, perhaps they might stand up and do something. Smuggling and hunting are very soon going to leave the world a very sad place when there are no animals left.
Now I am off to read Shadows over an African Heart.

Shadows Over an African Heart: a novel by Diana M. Hawkins

Shadows over an African Heart is the perfect name for this book. The shadows are even bigger than I ever dreamt, and this book is a real eye-opener to the truth of what is going on. I was in tears in many places in this book. The fictional side story I so enjoyed, but the true and very sad story of the elephants and other animals; the Zimbabwe government has so much to answer for.
The world needs to read both of Diana’s books and action needs to be taken before the children of today never see wildlife as we have had the joy to grow up with around us.
There are many African words in the story which to me were great to be reminded of, but many are explained as you read and there is a good glossary of the words in the back of the book.
