Maximum temperature 14C, minimum 5C. 18km/h NE winds, 54km/h gusts. 1 mm rain measured yesterday and 8mm this morning. Foggy and steady drizzle all day. Dismal!!
Wet roads and Autumn colours.
More autumn colours outside the church.
Waiting for the service to start it was cold and very wet!
The Mairie and the war memorial.
Laying the wreath after the service and one minute's silence,
Drinks and a chat in the Mairie afterwards.
This was followed by a luncheon...
Coquille de la mer, the only food photo that was any good!!
The meal was cooked by the local ladies and was excellent
For my French speaking followers. Sorry too long for me to try and translate!!
Today's sparrows enjoying bathing in the drizzle...
as above
As above.
The first time I have made corn bread inspired by Luna. Not something that is common here, but it appears to be in the USA.
N.B. Because photos are hard to come by in this weather, posts may well be a bit intermittent and not daily!!!!
Beautiful photos as always, Diane. The sparrows taking their bath are adorable. I love you made corn bread, maybe I will give it a try. Kisses, my friend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mia and we will certainly be making corn bread again, it was delicious, wish I had discovered it before! Hope you have a good week, Diane
DeleteIt is good to see the memorial in your area, Diane.
ReplyDeleteThe bird bathis priceless, as usual.
The French will never forget, they have taken a long time to recover! The birds are such fun :-)) Enjoy your week Diane
DeleteBread looks Yummy.
ReplyDeleteHi Horst good to hear from after so long. I hope that all is well and that you have a good week Diane
DeleteGood corn bread is one of life's great treats.
ReplyDeleteIt has taken us a long time to find that out David. Have never seen it in any country where we have lived!!! It will be a regular in this house from now on :-) Hope your week is a good one. Diane
DeleteA always, enjoyed the post. The service for our military veterans is important. We also share the same holiday with you.
ReplyDeleteAs for cornbread? Yes, very popular here in the states.
Velva
I agree the remembrance is very important and the the younger generation hopefully realise what all these people went through. Cornbread will often be on our menu from now on! Take care and have a good week, Diane
DeleteIt really is starting to look very cold over there. The leaves changing colour and falling to the ground - winter is just around the corner.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt about it the weather has certainly changed !!!! Keep well cheers Diane.
DeleteWe love our cornbread here in the states...esp in the south. I bake it or I have fired cornbread patties. We usually make ours in a cast iron skillet. Looks like a great day that you had. Nice.
ReplyDeleteCornbread patties sound good as well yum yum. Hope that all is well with you Diane
DeleteI'm so glad to see the remembrance services where you are. I'm curious whether the food and drink were gratis or there was a cost involved? I've never gone to a reception after the services here though they have them in all the legions (private drinking clubs for veterans). I'm told it is not gratis as they need to fund raise for their programs but am not 100% sure. When I read "reception" and there is no price I always assume it's gratis.
ReplyDeleteThe little sparrows taking a bath are so nicely captured. You do take great pics. I can never capture birds in motion. I also like your cornbread. When I was a child mother always made it but it was called Johnny cake. I didn't know very many people that made it and where I live now few people make it.I've put it on my list of things to bake. I might make it once a year. I've slowed down in baking a lot due to health issues but I still like the home baked goods now and then,
Enjoy your week.
I think that Johnny Cake is a pretty common alternate name for corn bread. It is commonly known as Johnny Cake here.
DeleteThanks Penny. Re the drinks and meal after the service. The drinks and the snacks at the Mairie are on the house, but we have to book and we pay for the meal. Really it is a minimal charge to just cover the cost of the food and wine. Looking at the exchange rate it, its about CAD 20 for four courses including wine. Any drinks from the bar are extra.
DeleteThe corn bread was so good I am really sorry that it has taken me so long to find out!! Not something we ever eat in Africa despite corn being the staple diet.
Hope you have a good week and take care Diane
Thank you Diane for the reply. I think that is quite acceptable to have free stuff and charge for the meal which is very reasonably prices and so well done. I'm so glad you enjoyed the corn bread and I'm sure you will now make it more often :-) I've noticed they don't make it in Kenya either despite everyone growing corn.
DeleteStrange that it is not popular in Africa when maize is the their main diet! Odd. So glad I have discovered it :-) Diane
DeleteVeterans Day is a day of memories to me. My father and uncles served as did two of my brothers. Good thoughts to all veterans, service people, and their families today.
ReplyDeleteWe did a tour of the war graves here in Europe a couple of years back, very sobering and many of our family names are there. Take care Diane
DeleteThe birds seem to be enjoying their bath in the cold weather. Your corn bread looks good! Have a great new week!
ReplyDeleteThe birds are the highlight of my winter so long as I remember to break the ice and keep the water level up. Keep well Diane
DeleteEven I - who cannot really read a word of French - can see that the story in French is one of lost men.
ReplyDeleteStewart M - Melbourne
PS_if your December trip is bringing you to Australia, it will be difficult for you to avoid seeing Silver Gulls even if you wanted to!
No Stewart not heading to Australia will update you very soon :-))) Take care and have a good week Diane
DeleteGood morning Diane. The weather doesn't really affect the quality of your photos, just the mood. I am glad the sparrows were not phased by the rain. I make all my own bread now as gluten free bread is very expensive to buy and difficult to get fresh. The corn bread looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteMorning Kim. I had never heard of corn bread while living in Africa, I guess it existed for people on special diets but not something I had come across. The birds just love those bowls of water so long as I make sure to keep filling them up :-)) Hope you have a great week Diane
DeleteSomehow the weather seems appropriate for this sombre occasion Diane. Delightful pics of the bathing birds and a slice of your corn bread, warm from the oven with French butter would be divine ☺
ReplyDeleteYou are right the weather did fit the occasion but it could have been a bit warmer!! That corn bread was very yummy. Hope your week is a good one. Diane
DeleteWonderful to have people still come out, to Remember.
ReplyDeletePlus, with only HS French, I can understand; "mal preparee et mal engegee, cette offensive va susciter beaucoup de ressentiment. <...> (30,000 morts un 10 jours), elle entraine la desillusion des soldats francais." -sigh- Sounds a bit like Gallipoli....
Luna Crone
My French is not that good either, Nigel does all the talking!! I only learnt my first word after I turned 60 and the brain does not work so well then as during school years!! Diane
DeleteHooray for making Corn Bread!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLuna Crone
Thanks and it all due to you. We will be making it often now. Enjoy your week. Diane
DeleteOur Armistcie Day Service was also wet, cold and windy, but we were served warming soup and french bread after the service. Lovely photos as always.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda.
