Maximum temperature 9C, minimum 0C. 3 mm of rain measured this morning. Total this month now 197 mm!! North Easterly winds; 8 km/h with up to 22 km/h gusts.
Église Saint-Pierre d'Auxerre in Auxerre. The church was completed in 1658 and is apparently in quite bad condition at present. They plan to start restoration this year which is good news!
As above, zooming in a little closer.
Closer to the centre of the town is the cathedral Saint Etienne, which was built between 1215 and 1233. More photos inside the cathedral are in an earlier post HERE
As above a little closer....
and closer still. Odd selection of pinnacles to the tower!
The Abbey of Saint Germain which was founded by Queen Clotilde in the 5th century.
As above... so 3 very large large religious structures in quite a small and otherwise undistinguished provincial town!
and a little closer
The bell tower in the front of the abbey.
I mentioned in a previous post that Auxerre is built on the west bank of the Yonne river, which is a tributary of the Seine and is 292 km (181 miles) long.
Today we did the French bird count. Two hours of watching what was going on in the garden here at home. This was the result. Some breeds I could not sex!

For those interested I have started a series of photos taken on Nevis in the Caribbean here. Both Part 1 and Part 2. More to follow
It all goes to show what a huge influence organized religion had on society it times past. Congratulations on doing your bird count.
ReplyDeleteReligion was very important in days gone by and of course in France mostly catholic.
DeleteI was disappointed that I saw nothing unusual on the bird count but I guess in winter that would really be the case. I was surprised though no green finches which are generally numerous. Have a good Sunday Diane
Quite a good result!
ReplyDeleteNo flooding in your area?
We are on high ground Marie, but all around us the lower areas are flooded. Our lawn though is like a saturated sponge. Hope all well there Diane
DeleteDiane! You have so many, beautiful, places to visit and photograph. It's amazing to me that even after being build in the 1200's and others, that they're still even standing! Thank you so much for sharing with us. I always enjoy you. :)

Europe has some incredible places, and generally the places are very good about restoring which is excellent. Glad you enjoy these photos. Keep well Diane
DeleteOld churches like that are so regal. I love the pictures.
ReplyDeleteThey are incredible and the building is quite something else. Diane
DeleteI like your zooming in shots. What a beautiful structure.
ReplyDeleteOld building in Europe are amazing. I am never going to get used to what the built many, many years ago without the tools we have today. Diane
DeleteHi Diane. Lovely photos of rather eclectic buildings. Weather looks rather bleak. Kim x
ReplyDeleteThe weather was horrible and we were both well and truly under the weather. Feeling better now but the cough will not go!! Diane
DeleteWE have been watching period TV shows and religion played a huge role in those times. The result is all the marvellous buildings.
ReplyDeleteThree amazing buildings in what is quite a small town really. T'other Diane
DeleteThat's a lot of rain Diane! I thought Vancouver had a lot at 146 mm in January 2018. I love the cathedral and you've taken such lovely photos of it. I hope you are feeling much better now. xx
ReplyDeleteWet outside and today wet inside!!! Feeling better but still coughing!!! Hope you are better Diane
