Maximum temperature today 12C, minimum 6C. 4 mm of rain measured this morning and it has been raining heavily again all day; 20 km/h Southerly winds with up to 60 km/h gusts.
It was a good job that I walked around the garden yesterday, as we are back to needing webbed feet again!!!
We had to go into Chasseneuil on Saturday, only to discover that some of the roads had been closed off and there were a crowd of people waving French flags - we never did find out what was going on!!!
We then had to go to Soyaux - driving over the river Touvre on the way - there were a lot of fishermen around.
Leroy Merlin, where we had to get the correct overflow pipe fitting for the new basin! it should have come with the rest of the order, but!!!
Inside the shop.
In the evening, we had a local dinner. There have to be a certain number of events at the Salle des Fetes to keep the licence going. At these events, the local ladies do all the cooking and there is no official catering of any sort. The food arrives in big dishes or bowls at the table and it is pretty much help yourself.
This menu cover photo, so we were told, was taken in the 40's when mobile stills were brought around the villages to make alcohol from the peoples' plums, pears or whatever! In the 1950's the Government made it illegal!!
The meal menu with a few more photos of the town.
and on the back.
Apéritifs at the bar...
while some people were finding a place to sit.
The mayor serving our soup. Nigel had a "place of honour" next to him (on his right and out of the photo)!!!
He is very thoughtful ; he knows I do not like the Bordeaux red wine which is generally served with meals, so he went and got me a bottle of rosé. 😊
Pot au feu.
Salade and fromage.
I think we all enjoyed a good evening with interesting company and for only €15 a head, including wine, it wasn't too expensive!
Did you finish the bottle all by yourself?
ReplyDeleteNo but I managed about 1/2 of it during the course of the evening :-))) Cheers Diane
DeleteSend the other half to me!
DeleteSadly I did not even get to take the second half home, the women were clearing the tables of everything before we left!!
DeleteIt looks great! And reasonably priced too!
ReplyDeleteAll of the community lunches and dinners are fairly reasonable and all have wine with them as well. Cheers Diane
DeleteYou have succeeded once again in making my mouth water and I just had lunch. I love the picture of the river and the bridge.
ReplyDeleteThe meals cooked by the ladies are always quite simple but very delicious. have a good day Diane
DeleteOh, your local dinner looks like what we used to do for family reunions. I'd always look forward to one of my aunts who made a Lane cake. It had about 8 thin layers with coconut and pecans. So good.
ReplyDeleteThe place you went for the part you needed reminds me of our Home Depot or Lowes. I don't know if you have those stores where you live.
I'm glad y'all had a good time! :)
xoxo
Mmmm that Lane cake sounds good, I have never heard of it must check out the recipe. I think most hardware stores look much the same but no we do not have Home Depot or a Lowes. Take care and I hope all is well now. Diane xx
DeleteYummy.....Looks so nice out in your area today. We had snow this morning, this after noon it hit 50! haha....A friend post on FB that he watched the snow at 5am and was mowing the grass this after noon!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you're shopping at our local Home Depot. Lovely choice of colors for toilet seats, if that's what they are. Nice looking dinner. Your Mayor is an extra special guy.
ReplyDeleteWe are very lucky with our Mayor, he is a pharmacist so is very much a peoples person. The last mayor (although I got on with him) was a farmer, and not really used to dealing with people to the same degree, for all that he had been voted in as mayor for a large number of years.
DeleteYes they are toilet seats, it amazes me the collection they have here. The one in our en suite has a 2CV Citroen on it :-) Have a happy week, guess you will be back at work again quite soon. Diane.
What a pretty shot of the bridge. And, ooh, I'm admiring that cheese.
ReplyDeleteI like these local meals, all home cooked and very like a big family enjoying it all. There are some lovely old bridges around France. Cheers Diane
DeleteLovely, interesting photos, Diane. Our rain seems to be finished and we are back to beautiful clear blue skies, thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteYou are glad to see the back of the rain and the Cape is still needing it. The weather needs a regulator!!!!
DeleteHave a fab week Diane
Sounds like fun. The salad and cheese plate is what I want for lunch today!
ReplyDeleteI also love salad and cheese. Hope you are well Diane
DeleteThats sounds like a fun meal.
ReplyDeleteTrue home cooking and always very tasty. Hope all is well t'other Diane
DeleteLovely view of River Touvre and the bridge!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy, the road was busier than normal so we were driving slowly. Usually I get a blurred shot!! Diane
