Yesterday we had our annual free lunch the commune puts on for its pensioners. Always a good meal, and a great atmosphere. The sun was shining and it was a perfect day.
We started off with snacks and an aperitif outside enjoying the warmer weather.
We then made our way back into the hall where we sat down to eat our way slowly through the menu...
Our mayor greeting us all...
and a short chat. Such a nice person, a pharmacist by trade.
I did not take a photo of the soup, not really interesting, but tasty and seconds if we wanted it. This is the assiette fois gras, something I do not eat out of choice simply because I do not like how the birds are force-fed, but I have to say I enjoy it when it is there to be eaten.
There was as much red, rose or white wine as one wanted to drink
Following was the pear sorbet with liqueur of course, again no photo. This was the main course of a large thick slice of very tender lamb leg with mashed potatoes, tomato and beans.
This was followed by 3 kinds of cheese and salad and this course I did forgot the photo!
Dessert was Dôme Mangue with fruit and chocolate which was quite delicious. Nigel had coffee which I seldom drink, and this was then followed by a glass of champagne.
At the end of the meal, each lady was given a primula plant to take home,...
mine was a deep burgundy colour and it has lots of buds.
We arrived home just before sunset and what a sunset it was.

If ever I come and visit I will have to be sure to time my visit to enjoy this feast! The meal looks absolutely delicious and there is wine and Champagne. And glorious French cheese. You are pampered indeed, Diane. As for foie gras, I share your feelings, but it is without doubt one of the great food treats in the entire world.
ReplyDeleteWe have several of these meals during the year but this one is free so it is even better 😊 Yes foie gras is fabulous, as I say I do not buy it on principal, but if it is part of a set menu then I cannot turn it down! Hope you have a good week Diane
DeleteIm sure you had a lovely day! and what delicious food Diane!hugs!

DeleteIt was a fabulous day all around for you and Nigel. I look forward to seeing what is on the menu each year, made all the more special by the photos of the delicious looking food! I've never had occasion to try foie gras but I know it is a delicacy there in France. Happy rest of your week Diane.
ReplyDeleteFoie gras is delicious I just do not like the way the poor birds are force fed to produce it!! Hope you have a happy week as well Penny, take care, Diane
DeleteLovely meeting and what delicious food☺
ReplyDeleteThanks Natalia it was a good afternoon out😊 Take care Diane
DeleteThis looks like a delightful gathering Diane. I enjoyed seeing the Mayor and all the other people. The food looked delicious. How very sweet that to end this lovely gathering you get to take home that beautiful primula. There is also lots of light in your photos, lovely!
ReplyDeleteDenise there are two walls in that hall which are entirely glass, the one wall gets the afternoon sun, sadly most of the French like to pull the curtains!!!! It was a good afternoon and good to catch up with peple you do not see so often. Keep well Diane
DeleteHow wonderful Diane, gosh there are so many lovely traditions in France, I don't remember anything like this happening here.. although it might be different in the smaller country towns. Such a nice, and delicious, way to catch up with the people of your village. Seriously, the French can be very civilized.. but not when they are destroying property in Paris though, that's a shocking reaction to non Europeans.
ReplyDeleteGrace there are some great traditions in France. As for the yellow jackets, it is not only in Paris, they are all over but luckily around here all they have destroyed are the roundabouts in the midde of the roads where they have been camping out!! Having said that theu have caused a couple of accidents where someone has been killed as well!! It is time they gave up it has been going on for too long! Take care Diane
DeleteIt looks a delicious menu. I love the fresh blooms on the table.
ReplyDeleteThat is one thing in France I have noticed, there is always fresh blooms on the dining tables, here there was enough for one for every couple, but generally they raffle them off after a meal. Cheers Diane
DeleteBeautiful flowers. Love those colors and it has me waiting more for the blooms of my plants to pop out. Looks like a great time and you always have some fancy but yummy looking food.
ReplyDeleteThe local luncheons are always good. Hope you have some blooms very soon. Take care Diane
DeleteA wonderful meal for pensioners. Great opportunity for seniors to come gather to enjoy a meal together! Stunning sunset! Take care and keep warm!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy it is always a good meal and yes a fabulous sunset. Hope all is well Diane
DeleteThat's a fancy meal! The profile I get from clicking on your comments still goes to Google Plus. I need to check if mine does, since it is going away soon.
ReplyDeleteLinda I have asked how I change my profile from Google Plus but so far I have had no response!! I never wanted G+ in the first place but they forced me into it!!!!! Have a good weekend Diane
DeleteHow awesome! Wish we had a similar event here for seniors. A great time to visit with neighbors and all, good food too and a pretty plant to top it off! Woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely idea and to receive a gift of a primula is very touching.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness that was a feast! If by “pensioners” you mean any elderly citizen, we would qualify ... and while we don’t usually look for free events, this one would certainly be tempting! What a nice thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI would dearly enjoy dining with you. It all looks so good.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful idea to give out the primula plants after the party.
