02/02/2020 Spring has sprung.........

Maximum temperature in the Charente today 18C, minimum 10C. Rain measured this morning 3mm but we have a blue sky today. 111mm of rain so far this year.  23km/h South-Westerly wind up to 43 km/h.

I say spring has sprung, but I suspect it might be short-lived as the temperatures drop again in the middle of the week.  If the forecast is right though, they then go back up again......

Photos were taken today on a walk in the garden.

We have not been without roses at all this year so far - amazing.

Moss and Lichen.

Common Speedwell - A pretty weed.

The first crocus.

Buds on the Red Robin. (Photinia Fraseri).

The first snowdrop. (Galanthus nivalis).

Buds on the Viburnum (Viburnum tinus).

The return of the fly!!!! Also Viburnum tinus)

Gendarme beetles or firebug, (Pyrrhocoris apterus).

As above -African masks!

Fairies a the bottom of the garden... no, I cannot identify it!

In the house, buds on the orchid...

The Christmas poinsettia is still thriving..

  5. Those kinds of temperatures seem unreal for January, even for where you live. It is mild here too, 3.5 degrees today. I can't believe this is good, especially if we get a cold snap, which is what should be happening at this time of the year. And people still deny global warming?

    1. David I feel it can only be global warming, this weather is very unreal. We will have to wait for another couple of months to see what happens. Hope you do not get too much snow! Cheers Diane

  7. Beautiful signs of spring in France. Sometimes we get very warm temperatures and signs of spring in February but right now the temperature is more than 4x cooler than yours though today was a nice, sunny day.

  9. It's always exciting to see the first signs of spring, the new buds and first snowdrops.. not so much the flies, they can be such a pain! Looking at your weather details it sounds like the perfect day in Charente, in Perth it's 40C! Am hoping my plants survive the next few days until the temps drop again. My cough seems to have disappeared again, but I have no doubts it will return, it always does, how about yours Diane?

  10. Hi Diane - love the photos ... that firebug is pretty amazing - are they dangerous? Fairies at the bottom of the garden ... lovely thought - but I'd prefer it to be warmer!! Wonderful to see your pics and to get the garden gossip news - cheers Hilary

    1. Hi Hilary, No the bugs are no problem, just as well as we have a lot. They eat by sucking the juices of plants but I have never noticed any damage. I gather some species also feed off animals and other insects - never noticed it.
Looks like we have some rubbish weather coming up at the weekend but still not desperately cold. Cheers Diane

Your shots of your garden flowers and wildlife are beautiful - are you using a macro lens for those close-ups?

I hope thjat your cough cas now passed. My very best wishes to you both - - - Richard
