I still have masses of South African photos to go through but meanwhile here in the garden.......
I have no idea what this tiny spider is, but you can see just how small in the following photo...
Apologies for the dirty thumbnail but I had been de-pipping cherries!!
Meadow brown (Maniola jurtina) with reflection in the greenhouse.
Ladybird larvae. (after the egg)
Ladybird pupae (after the larvae before the beetle).
Great green bush-cricket (Tettigonia viridissima).
Rosemary beetle (Chrysolina Americana). Despite its name, it is not found in America and it is a pest!
I have been told this is a male wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi).
Small White (Pieris rapae).
Capsodes flavomarginatus, very useful it eats greenflies amongst other things!
Red-and-black Froghopper (Cercopis vulnerate).
Meal Moth (Pyralis farinalis). thanks to Richard for the ID. This little spider thought it had a meal for some time, but the moth escaped!
Triangulate-Combfoot (Steatoda-triangulosa).
Bombylius cruciatus.
I suspect it is a Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) but the female Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleopatra) is so very similar...... I am not convinced.
European paper wasp (Polistes dominula). Taking a drink.
Hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)...
As above.
Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) on the cotoneaster.
Love in a Mist (Nigella damascene) with what I think is a (Halictus rubicundus, the orange-legged furrow bee.
Orchids in the house (Phalaenopsis sp).
Dinner on the verandah. Cheers.

A beautiful collection of insect photos. I especially love the butterfly with reflection in glass. That outdoor space with dining table,,, what a lovely space to share a meal and enjoy nature.
ReplyDeleteThanks Yvonne I was very excited to get that shot of the butterfly with refection, something I have never succeeded in doing before 😊 Thanks for the visit, have a good week, Diane
DeleteThose macro shots are amazing, I love esp. that butterfly with reflection. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks Angie for the kind comment, and yes that butterfly seems to be a favourite. Keep well and take care Diane.
DeleteYes, cheers Diane., I think we have eaten outside for almost four weeks now even though our temperatures are not as high as your own. You are very knowledgeable with your insects and the pics are super. I did manage to ID the Hummingbird Hawk Moth but even the common Meadow Brown I never get to see like your photo. Isn't that paper moth beautiful? very striking.
ReplyDeleteThanks you Phil, it is actually quite hot eating outside at present, but we do need rain, the garden is struggling.
DeleteI presume you meant the paper wasp, it is very striking in its black and yellow outfit :-) Most of these insects are regulars and I have got to know them, though I quite often have to double check!!
Keep well and take care Diane
You have great patience to capture all of these critters, Diane. I photographed a green beetle recently and that was enough for me. You have great shots here.
ReplyDeleteMarie I have no patience at all, just luck that they appear when they do!! I generally go out in the afternoon for about 10 mins with the camera and that is about it. If I should be working in the garden and I see something that I think might hang around that I might nip inside to get the camera. It is always to hot (or too wet at other times of the year) to keep it close by!! I hope all is well, Diane
DeleteAll so tiny and superbly photographed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gaelyn, all up to my Nikon and Tamron lens, they work well together 😊 Keep safe and take care, best wishes from us both. Diane
DeleteHi Diane - amazing photos - and I'm so pleased you give us the details of each plant, insect etc etc ... but how lovely to see you enjoying supper/dinner on the patio after all the day's work ... just delightful - thank you ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteHi Hilary, I always try to find out what each bug is, some I know from previous viewing, often though I have to look them up. We do love this weather when we can enjoy the outside, but at the moment the garden is crying out for rain! Keep well, cheers Diane
DeleteFabulous close up photos. sounds like perfect weather now. enjoy dinner.
ReplyDeleteThanks Diane. Dinner is always good outside especially as it is normally Nigel cooking at the braai (barbecue).
DeleteHope all is well with you two over there, keep well, cheers t'other Diane
Sorry for the late visit, Diane - explanation in my reply to your comment on my blog!
ReplyDeleteYour macro work is up to your usual beautiful very high standard and delightful to behold. Your 'Carpet Moth' is, I am relatively sure, a Meal Moth (Pyralis farinalis).
I have just realised that I want to come and have lunch on your veranda !
My very best wishes to you and Nigel - - - Richard
Thanks Richard, sorry for my late reply, I have been having trouble getting into my own blog even now it is still not working properly. Thanks for the ID I am not very good with moths, the only photo that I could find that looked similar was one of the carpet moths. Having looked up the meal moth I am sure you are right.
DeleteYou are welcome to lunch just give me a bit of warning :-)
I hope all is running a bit more smoothly health wise over there.
Cheers and very best wishes to you both. Diane
Forgot to add that we have several of these living in and around out compost bin!!
DeleteHow lovely to have dinner on the verandah. Your photos are delightful, marvelous macros and those insects are fascinating. Cheers Diane!
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise, I wish I had more patience as then I am sure I would get far more photos than I find in short visits to the garden. Cheers and best wishes Diane
Nous n'avons eu presque aucune pluie sauf aujourd'hui 22 juin. Environ 20mm et un peu de tonnerre.
DeleteJ'espère que tout va bien. Bisous Diane
I enjoyed all your photos. But most of all "de sprinkhaan".
ReplyDeleteGreat macros of the insects!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much your comment is much appreciated. Cheers Diane
